BURCH COLPOSUSPENSION

BURCH COLPOSUSPENSION

Burch colposuspension is a surgical procedure undertaken in women to treat stress urinary incontinence. The surgeon places sutures that support the bladder and the urethra, hence avoiding the involuntary leakage of urine produced due to such physical activities as coughing, sneezing, or exercising. Small incisions are made in the abdomen wall for the surgery. It is generally done through a laparoscope or via the open abdominal approach. Burch colposuspension is chosen because it provides a long-term benefit for symptom management. Recovery from surgery generally includes weeks of restricted physical activity. Patients may experience some discomfort and swelling at first. The success rates, in general, are high and most women report significant improvement in urinary control. As always, each patient must discuss with their health care provider the risk of surgery and possible complications.
