Laser-assisted hatching refers to the techniques that are aimed at improving the implantation potentials of the embryo in assisted reproduction technologies. A small hole made in the outer shell of the embryo, called the zona pellucida, using a laser helps bind the embryo to the uterine lining. This method of assisted hatching, in fact, is used quite frequently in most cycles of IVF, especially for those embryos that have a thicker or more resistant zona pellucida. The technique will increase the chance of successful implantation of the embryo and thereby improve pregnancy rates by enhancing the embryo's ability to "hatch" from its shell.
