Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure to reconstruct the hymen, which is a thin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. Due to mainly cultural, personal, or religious reasons, hymenoplasty is very often performed by surgically reattaching or rebuilding the hymen to give it a newer appearance. The procedure is generally done with local anesthesia and has a minimally invasive nature with recovery taking a few weeks. Though hymenoplasty can restore the hymen in its original integrity, it is quite necessary to remember that it has little to do with sexual function or health.
