Water birth is when a person gives birth in warm water. What this does is set up a soothing, calm environment for both the birthing person and the baby. It may alleviate some of the pain of labor, promote relaxation, and possibly even shorten labor time. In this setting, the buoyancy of the water enhances support to the body of the birthing person, making it easy to change positions and putting less strain on the muscles. Labor in water, called a water birth, may be attended in a home, birth center, or the hospital and is usually conducted by midwives or otherwise trained health care providers. It is regarded as safe for many pregnancies but one has to discuss with a health expert to make sure that it will be appropriate in one's case.
