High-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, the baby, or both are at higher than normal risk of having some problems. Pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and blood pressure, multiple pregnancy, or advanced maternal age, or complications in pregnancy like preeclampsia or gestational diabetes, would put pregnancy into the high-risk category. Women at risk of problems in pregnancy often require closer monitoring and, in most instances, special care and probably additional testing to ensure the health of the mother and the fetus. These management strategies may include increased prenatal visits, advanced screenings, and a tailored birth plan. Proactively treating high-risk conditions improves outcomes so that the pregnancy and delivery can be much safer.
