FETAL REDUCTION

Fetal reduction is a medical procedure in multiple pregnancies that reduce the number of fetuses, thereby improving outcomes for the remaining ones. Often recommended in cases of high-order multiples, triplets or more, this procedure involves the selective termination of one or more fetuses in order to decrease risks associated with a multiple birth, such as preterm labor, low birth weight, and maternal complications. Fetal reduction is conducted under ultrasound guidance, whereby a needle is inserted to inject a substance to stop the fetal heart rate. This is done to improve the health and survival prospects of the remaining fetuses and to support a safer pregnancy and delivery.
