Vaginismus is characterized by involuntary contraction of the vaginal musculature, which has the effect of being painful during penetration in view of sexual activity, gynecological examination, or tampon insertion. This may result from physical factors such as hormonal changes and infections and from psychological factors like anxiety or past trauma. This generally includes physical therapy, such as pelvic floor exercises and dilation techniques, and either counseling or other forms of therapy to deal with unresolved emotional issues. It is by individualizing an approach that symptom alleviation, improvement in sexual functioning, and quality of life are achieved. Effective management and support are therefore greatly rooted in open communication with one's healthcare provider.
